By magnusrwApril 21, in General IH. Do any of you folks know what the basic difference among the 3LMs is? I have acquired a 3LM in very nice condition and a 3LM that is basically toast but still has good housings and a good compressor wheel.

Does the have a smaller exhaust housing? Can it be used on the 3LM? I'm trying to find a combo that would make a decent turbo for a Perkins T6. I'm concerned that my engine won't be able to spool up the 3LM I have never heard of a 3LM on our we used a 3LM since I was concerned with the same thing you were. I would check with a local turbo shop and see what applications the was used on what CID and HP they should have a book for cross reference.

If I were to guess the exhaust housings are different for sure possible the exhaust wheel, the intakes are the same. I know between the 3LM and the 3LM the difference is in the exhaust housings cant confirm on the exhaust wheel, the intakes are the same. Just by looking at them I can see that the compressor wheels are different, the has far more compressor blades. The exhaust wheels look very similar though the housings are obviously different, in at least one regard: the has the larger, squarer flange.

I'm suspecting and hoping that the 3 digit number refers to exhaust housing size and that If I can put the housing on theit will be a reasonably sized turbo for my 6. General IH Search In.

Thanks for the help folks! Yes Mr Asker Im speaking of you, yes I can read a map, but i build my moters with a micromiter not a yardstick!!!! Actuall measurments are the best builders tools, you cant find that on a map with a skiggly line that has a foriegn engine as a base.

When looking for the right turbocharger for your car or truck many of us are stumped by what all the numbers mean when shopping for a turbo. Technically, it is defined as:. The inlet or, for compressor housings, the discharge cross-sectional area divided by the radius from the turbo centerline to the centroid of that area.

Here is a great example of what this looks like. They are both T3 inlet, divided housings. The smaller one is a. Its VERY easy to see the difference in sizes. You go too big and you actually loose flow because you loose the scavenging effect.

Go to small and you bottleneck the exhaust and loose power. If you go to large for your size motor the turbo will be lazy and slow reacting. Go to small and the turbo will be choked up in the upper RPM powerband. Now for the hard part. This is the hard part. To big and the turbo is lazy. To small and you lose your power potential, which is the whole reason your paying the big bucks to upgrade your turbo in the first place.

Someone out there has probably installed your same turbo and you can find a review written by him or her about how it behaves on your particular engine. Also you can email them and ask them how responsive the set-up is and when they are starting to see boost, and when they see full boost. When in doubt, pick the one in the middle. What I mean by this is most manufacturers offer several housings for each turbo. Choosing the one in the middle will give the turbo a little of both worlds.
